THE NIGHT OF THE PURPLE MOON, recorded in 1970, features Sun Ra playing two electronic keyboards that were popular with psychedelic bands: the Rocksichord and the Minimoog. Ra used them to explore the sonic possibilities with futuristic music. Yet listening to Purple Moon, there's a sense that after a decade of experimentalism and free jazz, Sun Ra wanted to make an accessible pop record.
