NEW RELEASE: Sun Ra - The Night Of The Purple Moon

19700000 RLC2 163 The Night of the Purple Moon [2014 Remaster Thoth Intergalactic IR 1972] New York, NY

THE NIGHT OF THE PURPLE MOON, recorded in 1970, features Sun Ra playing two electronic keyboards that were popular with psychedelic bands: the Rocksichord and the Minimoog. Ra used them to explore the sonic possibilities with futuristic music. Yet listening to Purple Moon, there's a sense that after a decade of experimentalism and free jazz, Sun Ra wanted to make an accessible pop record.

NEW RELEASE: Sun Ra - Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow

19611100-19620000 RLC2 77-82 Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow [2014 Remaster Saturn Research SRLP9956] Choreographer's Workshop; New York, NY

24-bit remastered edition of ART FORMS OF DIMENSIONS TOMORROW, produced after Sun Ra's 1961 move from Chicago to NYC. Art Forms displays Sunny's tendency to juxtapose stylistic extremes to showcase versatility. "Cluster of Galaxies" and "Solar Drums" are percussion soundscapes, "Ankh #1" a swaggering R&B tune. "The Outer Heavens" echoes Third Stream jazz, while "Infinity of the Universe" offsets a percussion battalion with thunderous low-register piano. "Lights on a Satellite" and "Kosmos in Blue" ground the set with stylish hard bop. Includes the complete "Cluster of Galaxies" and a previously unreleased bonus track, an after-hours quartet cooker titled "Chicago, Southside."

NEW RELEASE: Sun Ra - Voice of the Eternal Tomorrow

19800917 RLC2 327 Voice of the Eternal Tomorrow [2014 Remaster El Saturn Records 91780] Squat Theater; New York, NY

Newly remastered for iTunes, a live 1980 Sun Ra album recorded at NYC's Squat Theater. "Eternal Tomorrow" has never been reissued in any format & LP copies are rare. The music is confrontational, defiant, and studded with explosive outbursts. The recording fidelity is raw because it was hard to capture this orchestrated chaos in a tiny space. But this is history: the time, the space, the players will never again converge.
